Today the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) notified 132 Head Start grantees that they have been designated to compete for continued Head Start funding. Under new regulations announced by President Barack Obama in November 2011, grantees who do not meet quality thresholds established by the Office of Head Start will have to compete, for the first time ever, with other potential providers for Head Start funding. Funding announcements for these service areas will be posted on www.grants.gov in early 2012. HHS will only award funds to organizations that demonstrate they are the most qualified entity to deliver a high-quality and comprehensive Head Start program.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, President Obama announced that the Administration will go forward with final regulations related to the recompetition of underperforming Head Start and Early Head Start agencies.
From NHSA:
“This morning at Yeadon Regional Head Start in Pennsylvania, President Obama addressed the valuable work done by committed Head Start educators, families and communities across the country. Over the last five decades, more than 27 million children have been provided critical early childhood education services and a window of opportunity to develop and grow into healthy, productive members of society. These children have gone on to become teachers, doctors, lawyers, business-leaders, entrepreneurs, prize-winning poets, public servants, the Treasurer of the United States and this year’s Grammy winner, Jazz artist Esperanza Spalding".
